E-Health: Challenges and opportunities for young people.

A lack of knowledge is not an excuse: it is a symptom of indolence towards your well-being. Take advantage of online resources and empower yourself regarding your health and well-being.

Sometimes we fear — with reason — the havoc that can be caused by new media when they are used irresponsibly. That is why it is necessary to properly orient the communicative practices of the populations and, more urgently, those of young people who, due to lack of skills, can be harmed by these actions.

At present, the internet has become a conglomerate of strategies that respond to the needs of each human dimension, and health is no exception. At the international level, strategies of health promotion and disease prevention have been developed under the umbrella term e-health. And, although English is the lingua franca of the internet, every day there are more and more projects, applications and websites in Spanish that fulfill this same function.

E-health works through interactive blogging, the generation and diffusion of images and videos, and their popularization at the level of social networks. Some of its most effective strategies operate in the form of online forums where communication between the different agents related to health —patients, relatives, caregivers, doctors, nurses, etc.— takes place. And, in addition, these mechanisms are usually articulated with face-to-face active intervention strategies in health, such as congresses, workshops and other forms of health promotion. In addition to the formation of support groups for people with diseases, some of the most relevant areas of intervention in e-health are mental health, addiction prevention, and food and nutrition improvement strategies,

Mental Health: Preventing and Helping.

Some of the major e-health work groups focus on the prevention of psychological disorders and the creation of support groups for those suffering from them.

According to scientific studies, the effectiveness of e-health interventions is high in preventing disorders such as depression and anxiety in young people. One of the explanations of this phenomenon is that the online media can overcome the current barriers in mental health care, as these services are accessible to anyone and help people who do not attend face-to-face services due to stigma or taboos.

In addition, e-health services transcend prevention. There are more treatment strategies —based on cognitive behavioral therapies— that help young people between the ages of 12 and 18 cope with their symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Tobacco and alcohol: Acting on time.

In health, prevention and promotion are strategies that are much more effective than care and rehabilitation. This fact, which we all understand from the motto "it is easier to prevent than to cure", has special validity in the case of tobacco and alcohol addiction: It is always easier, cheaper, and effective to prevent an addiction than to treat it.

Legal strategies to ban and reduce alcohol and tobacco advertising have done much to reduce youth exposure to these addictive scourges. And, complemented by online strategies that explain the horrors of addiction, we reinforce our preventive strategies day by day. Current meta-analyses suggest that online strategies have the same effectiveness as face-to-face methods, without having the inconveniences of time, accessibility, negligence or shame that can appear in presential therapies.

Nutrition and food.

Educating populations about food and nutrition promotes greater well-being and generates preventive mechanisms for multiple diseases and disorders. Some applications and websites offer universal access with suggestions appropriate to local specificities. With timely information, these strategies improve the nutrition and feeding of the neediest populations.

With recipes, nutritional values, ??and suggestions on ingredients and culinary techniques, these websites and applications have the potential to become the best and most immediate allies of nutrition for each member of the community.
